U.S. Weekly Jobless Claims Drop More Than Expected

Adding to the positive picture of the labor market painted by last week's monthly jobs report, the Labor Department released a report on Thursday showing a bigger than expected drop in first-time claims for U.S. unemployment benefits in the week ended January 5th.

The report said initial jobless claims fell to 216,000, a decrease of 17,000 from the previous week's revised level of 233,000. Economists had expected jobless claims to dip to 225,000 from the 231.000 originally reported for the previous week.

After the release of the U.S. weekly jobless claims for the week ended January 5 at 8:30 am ET Thursday, the greenback changed little against its major counterparts.

The greenback was trading at 108.10 against the yen, 0.9781 against the franc, 1.2765 against the pound and 1.1535 against the euro around 8:32 am ET.

At 8:30 am ET Thursday, Canada building permits and house price index for November have been released. Following these data, the loonie changed little against its major opponents.

The loonie was trading at 81.74 against the yen, 0.9509 against the aussie, 1.3225 against the greenback and 1.5255 against the euro around 8:34 am ET.

Slovenia Industrial Production Grows In November

Slovenia's industrial production grew in November, preliminary figures from the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia showed on Thursday.

The seasonally adjusted industrial production climbed 2.5 percent year-on-year in November and manufacturing output rose 2.7 percent.

Meanwhile, in mining and quarrying industry,output declined by 15.7 percent in November.

Intermediate goods industry logged output growth of 0.6 percent and capital goods production jumped 4.6 percent. Production of consumer goods rose 4.1 percent.

On a monthly basis, the industrial production declined 0.2 percent in November.

Bulgaria Industrial Production Grows At Steady Pace

Bulgaria's industrial production growth held steady in November, preliminary figures from the National Statistical Institute showed on Thursday.

Industrial production climbed a working day adjusted 1.2 percent year-on-year in November, the same as in October.

Manufacturing output grew 2.0 percent annually in December after a rise of 2.2 percent in October. Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply fell by 3.9 percent and mining and quarrying output declined by 2.6 percent in November.

Month-on-month, industrial production rose 0.4 percent from November, when it rose 0.6 percent in October.

The agency also revealed that, the construction production fell 1.8 percent annually, in November after a rise of 1.9 percent in October. Output dropped 1.2 percent following a 3.3 percent increase.
