Officials for the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, confirmed Sunday that the Games were hit by a cyber attack just before Friday's opening ceremony. “All issues were resolved and recovered yesterday morning,” Olympics spokesperson Sung Baik-you told reporters Sunday. “We know the cause of the problem, but that kind of issues occurs frequently during the Games. We decided with the [International Olympic Committee] we are not going to reveal the source.”

Violence erupted Saturday in Seattle after hundreds of counter-protesters showed up to a College Republicans-led "Freedom Rally" on the campus of the University of Washington. There were at least five arrests, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Patriot Prayer, a right-wing group based in Vancouver, Washington, was invited to speak by the school’s Republican committee sparking protests, which led to the clash at Red Square. Police had erected barricades to keep the peace but would later use pepper spray to subdue the opposing sides.

A passenger plane operated by a Russian airliner crashed Sunday shortly upon takeoff near Moscow. Saratov Airlines flight #6W703, heading from Domodedovo Airport to Orsk, a city 1,000 miles southeast of Moscow. All 65 passengers and six crew members died in the crash, according to reports.

A Pennsylvania man who was convicted of a sex crime and registered as a sex offender became a fire company’s chief with the mayor’s approval. Roger L. Gilbert Jr. was re-elected to his second term as the chief of the volunteer fire department in the small town of Spartansburg, located in northwest Pennsylvania. The chief is elected by the other volunteer firefighters. Gilbert was convicted in 2001 of a first-degree felony for involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a 4-year-old. The crime was committed in 2000 in nearby Corry, Pennsylvania.
